Day 8

Copper Canyon Passenger Train
We all boarded the bus at the RV park in Los Mochis at 7 0'dark in the morning ( the sun wasn’t even up yet ) for the hour and 10 minute trip to the train station in El Fuerte. The train was almost on time and we pulled out at 8:40 AM.  For the next 7 hours we chugged eastward, into and then through the Copper Canyon to the the town of Creel.

Along the way we passed over 36 bridges ( the longest being1637 ft ) and through a number of the 87 tunnels ( the longest being 5966 ft ) along the route.

The elevation went from 350 feet at El Fuerte to over 8000 feet near Creel. Overall it was a very scenic and pleasant trip, which also included a tasty lunch in the dining car. We also had a couple of security guys on board with M-16 rifles who hopped out and watched both ends of the train any time we made a stop. I assume they were railroad security cops of some sort. When we arrived in Creel a bus picked us up and transported us to the Hotel Plaza Mexicana Margaritas (nice place with a European flavor). After getting settled in our rooms we were treated to a margarita Happy Hour and a Mexican dinner at the hotel. Due to the elevation here, the temperature is significantly cooler than down near sea level so we were all glad that we brought jackets and that the rooms had heaters.
