Day 37

Another free day at Loreto but this one started off with an excellent breakfast of bacon, eggs, pancakes, juice and coffee prepared by the staff. Missouri Paul made a motion that the staff prepares breakfast for us like this every morning until we arrive at California. The vote was unanimous but I really think we have as much of a chance of that happening as a snow storm in Cabo San Lucas in July.

Nice Road

At 10:30am we gathered for a ride share to Mission San Francisco Javier. The road was paved for the first 22 KM then we went off-roading in Clif & Joan's Ford Fusion. There was a lot of construction on and off for the next 10 KM. Those in the group that had trucks were lucky as they probably didn't bottom out as often as Cliffs’ car. There were long stretches of the road that had painted rocks along both sides. We presumed that they were placed there so we could tell the road from the fields although at times the road was so rough that the fields may have been better.
Mission San Francisco Javier
We finally arrived at the little hamlet of Mission San Javier and the white dome of the Mission church could be seen above the trees as we approached. The church was built between 1744 and 1758. It is today one of the main sanctuaries of the Baja Peninsula. Every December 2nd it is visited by thousands of pilgrims who come from different parts of Mexico to view the alter pieces and the wood and stone sculptures. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful in all of the Baja Peninsula. I took a couple of pictures there.
After lunch at a local cafe we ventured back down the trail.  The road back seemed a lot shorter and probably was because we had different detours. Clif pulled over to let one of the locals pass us and a few miles later we saw them come back onto our detour route as they had taken the wrong road and had gone onto the new section of highway which had abruptly ended. That was very easy to do as there were no signs or flagmen and you were never quite sure which way you should be going.
Back in town we had Happy Hour at 4:00pm and then shut down early as we will be leaving tomorrow.
